My First Bible
I grew up in Salisbury, Maryland and, when I was young, I attended Sunday School and was confirmed at Asbury United Methodist Church. I remember very little about Sunday School but I will never forget the day I was confirmed and received my Bible. First, I remember when we chose our Bible color and they had black and red to choose from. I was going to choose black but my mom’s Bible was white and she asked if we could choose white instead and the church said yes! I remember feeling very special that I was able to have a white Bible while everyone else received a black or red Bible.
The ceremony was like an unforgettable dream. I felt something powerful that I did not understand then and still cannot really explain today. It might have been nerves but I remember feeling like I was going to faint and then just letting go and sort of drifting through the ceremony like I was watching it and not really there. I have never again felt that way and I had never felt that way before. I kept that Bible with me all these years and I am so happy that, nearly five decades later, I finally read it cover to cover. Asbury is a beautiful Church and I am grateful to have this beautiful memory from such a beautiful church. I am grateful to have received my, now falling apart, Bible from such a special Church. I am most grateful that I finally found the time to read it and, more than that, I am seeking to understand scripture and share it with others.
